This Season’s Essentials: Shawls
Whether it is the elegance they add on to your look or the unique style, shawls are this season’s essential item for those looking to add a bit of flavor to their outfit. Lightweight scarves and shawls not only make a fashion statement but they’re also very practical. With their endless prints, eye-catching designs, pretty colors and various fabrics – including silk, cashmere, chiffon and linen - shawls will be your “must” item for the summer when creating a rich and classic look.
We suggest investing in neck scarves and shawls for the workplace, fun and bold styles for casual outings, and chic styles for sophisticated events.
For a little glamour, wear a shawl - in an eye-catching design with color and/or shimmer, or in a similar color palette as your outfit – as a belt by wrapping it around your waist. Not only will it emphasize your fashion sense, but it will also hide big thighs and balance your curves. A bright colored one or one with an eye-catching design will spice up plain black dress; simply tie it around your waist in a low slung way, off-center and you are good to go.
The shawl as a belt also translates well into beach style. Wear your bathing suit underneath, and tie the shawl over your waist or your hips.
Lastly, for those who want to be prepared for the occasional summer nights’ breeze, shawls are a greatly practical accessory, keeping you warm when it gets just a little chilly. A fun summer dress finished off with a beautiful shawl hung over the shoulders will add on charm and sophistication while protecting you on a breezy night.

When “More” is “More”
Portion control is very important in maintaining a healthy weight and lifestyle. Especially in theUnited States, we often lose sight of what one serving really looks like. Packaged foods can also be misleading because “one serving” according to the label, can often be much larger than “one serving” according to the food pyramid.
- The recommended portion size for a piece of chicken is about the size of iPhone.
- An entrée size serving of pasta is about the size of a baseball.
- A piece of fish should be about the size of a checkbook
- A baked potato should be about the size of a tennis ball.
- The recommended 1oz serving of cheese is about the size of a lipstick tube.
- A “sub” sandwich, should be about the length of a toothbrush.
There are some things that you can eat and drink to your hearts content, when more really is more. While it is recommended that you have eight glasses of water per day, you can drink as much as you like. Water not only hydrates and helps flush out toxins, it also helps in faux wrinkle reduction.
Other items you can consume without much worry are raw vegetables. Snack on celery, sliced peppers, leafy greens, and other low-carbohydrate vegetables…just be careful about adding dressing or humus and remember the serving sizes of these toppers – 2tbsps of humus goes quick!

When "Less" is "More"
I am asked this question frequently; “how can I know a product will work?” There is only one real way to know and that is to try it on your own skin. We all are very different, so testing a product on your skin is the only reliable way to know that it will work for you.
Other factors can be indicators that it might work for you, including clinical studies, recommendations from friends who have used the product and seen positive results, and recommendations from skincare professionals and dermatologists.
Because there are so many factors involved in this, I love sampling! It is a process that has built the beauty industry. The samples we have provided for you in this promotion can be your traveler, it can be broken down into gifts for your friends to try, or it can be your way to find out which of our products work best for you - just in time for our July sale.
Do not miss this opportunity, or any opportunity, to sample products and find out what works for you. It is the only real way you can know for sure!

My Top Four Wrinkle Tips
Wrinkles come in different sizes and shapes on different parts of the face. Understanding the specialized products and techniques for applying them can instantly give you a wrinkle-free face.
Faux wrinkles are caused by dehydrated skin. They usually show up first on the areas where the skin is thinner such as around the eyes and on the neck. They are easy to correct with a super hydrating serum and moisturizer combo. Be sure to drink plenty of water because internal dehydration also contributes to this problem.
Un-wrinkle provides an instant temporary fix by forming a film that smoothes out wrinkles. It only works while it is on your face. And the instructions for applying it must be followed meticulously. Un-wrinkle has been a top-selling product for years for its ability to temporarily diminish the look of wrinkles completely AND instantly.
Wrinkle Treatment Concealer – Wrinkles look like dark marks on our face because light falls into the bottom of the wrinkle, creating this effect. By painting a light colored concealer along the depth of the wrinkle, we create an illusion of diminishing these imperfections…This is a great trick.
Line Lifting Therapy Mask will transform aging, wrinkled, sagging skin. I use it every time before I am going to be photographed, before a special event or before I’m going to be on television. Follow this mask (which takes about 15 minutes) with Dry Parts Moisture Mask (about 15 minutes) and you’ll look like you had a tightening face lift. The secret to getting these spectacular results from the Line Lifting mask is to use a hairdryer to speed the drying of the mask. Once it is dry and tight on your face, hold your face immobile so that it does not crack.

Packing List for a Summer Getaway
Packing for a summer getaway is always a bit of a challenge – no matter how short or long your trip will be. And when you are unsure about what to pack, you end up packing everything – but don’t we all? With the summer right around the corner, we thought we would bring you the basics to pack everything you need in an efficient way.
It is almost the season of weekend getaways! No matter how organized one might be, a relaxing trip often means stressful late night packing and suitcase wars the night before! Avoid over packing too many clothes by bringing along essential, classic pieces that you wear often. And use them to build multiple looks. Pick out a few clothing items - we suggest in neutrals like blacks, whites, browns and grays, since they go with anything - and “mix and match” different pieces to create a unique look for every day. You will create so many looks with the limited wardrobe you have.
Once you've determined the outfit combinations for your trip, throw in your favorite jewelry in the bag – preferably bright colored ones to liven up your look. Lively color hues such as yellow, violet, red and sky blue can be mixed and matched with neutral colors for a gorgeous, chic look.
Extra Tips For the Road
Travel with a carry-on suitcase on wheels, with lots of zipper compartments to help you stay organized. Make sure that you pick an affordable suitcase as opposed to an expensive designer luggage especially if you are flying – in the case that it goes missing or gets roughed up at some point.
Throw a cashmere scarf into your purse. Pick a bright colored scarf and carry it with you everywhere. Not only does it add to your sophisticated style, but it keeps you warm from an unexpected chill during spring and summer nights. With its lightweight material, a beautiful cashmere scarf is also very convenient to carry around with you everywhere; just throw it in your bag!
Stretchy Pants. Make sure to pack comfortable stretchy pants along, especially since you might have to sit for a long time – on a bus or a train, in a car or on a plane – when you are travelling. Your pants need to be easily contorted into whatever position you end up having to sit in.
Moisturize! A lot of travelling, long hours on the bus or the plane, and a change of weather and humidity levels, can take a toll on your skin – no matter how much you take care of it in your everyday life. That is why your moisturizer is a “MUST” at the top of your packing list.

The Many Textures of Concealers
Not only do concealers come in different shades but they also are made with different consistencies. It’s important to understand the texture of the concealer for the problem we’re trying to correct. Let’s look at these different types:
Cream… The most pigment dense type which gives maximum coverage. Extremely easy to blend. Coverall Undereye Concealer
Pressed Cream…Handy compact packaging with medium to heavy coverage. It’s the most convenient to carry around. Red Neutralizer No.2
Powder… Best for oily areas like upper eyelids, nose and chin. Simple application and blending. Even-ing Concealer.
Cream-to-Powder…Amazing for under-eye darkness on beginning-to-age eye area. Multiple applications give necessary coverage. C-Circles Vanish.
Fluid or Pump… Thinnest consistency. Usually applied all-over the face or on larger areas. Layering will accomplish density for proper coverage. Wrinkle Treatment Concealer.

For Professional Results: Beauty Tools
I know that many of you like to use your fingers to apply and blend your makeup for a flawless finish. And while I understand why so many of you choose to do this, this “easy-way-out” is not the best way to achieve the most beneficial results. This is because your fingers have bacteria, oil and warmth. Beauty tools, on the other hand, have an amazing capacity to get you professional results; they create results that were only previously achievable by professional make-up artists.
To achieve flawless, natural looking skin with the help of makeup, make sure to choose the correct brush for the effect you are trying to create on a specific part of your face. Avoid using the same brush for all the areas on your face. Remember that these tools – with their handles, shapes, brush hairs - are designed and specialized for different, specific areas of your face.
Here are the professional tools that I use on a daily basis to achieve perfect results:
- Brow Brush - I am a fanatic of perfecting the look of aging brows. Brows are a very defined feature on our face, which is why it is so important to keep them looking perfect. It starts with the right brow brush. The hairs should be stiff and cut in a very defined angle. For those of you that do not own a brow brush already, I recommend the slant angle brow brush that I use on a daily basis.
- Eye Lining Brush– Eye lining the eyelids is crucial in making an older eye look firmer and brighter. Though many of us find it difficult to line the upper eyelid, this is only because we are not using the properly angled brush to help. Our bent angle lining brush, with its very fine hairs, gets the job done quick and easy with flawless results.
- Brush for the Sagging Eyelids - The fastest way to make your aging eyelids look firmer and younger is to apply a matte dark eye shadow in the crease. Using the proper crease brush will have the lifting effect.
- All-Over Blending Brush- The kabuki brush is the wonder worker of professional beauty tools. Use it on your body, your cheeks, your forehead or all over your face. It works with all powders and cream-to-powders, giving a perfect blending effect.

Flip-Flops: Not Very Feet Friendly
With the gorgeous sunny weather outside signaling the summer right around the corner, we can’t help but want to wear light, comfortable flip-flops. After all, who doesn’t want to walk freely and feel the breeze without having to worry about sweaty feet in closed shoes or a pretty pair of heels that are hard to walk in? For many reasons like this and more, we turn to flip-flops during summer months. But are flip-flops actually good for our feet? Research says no. Read on and you will reconsider your go-to flip-flop habit.
As much as flip-flops may feel like the perfect footwear for warm weather, they should not be considered as “shoes”. Though many people treat them as such - sporting a pair during an errand run or a trip to the grocery store - flip flops are actually sandals, originally meant for use only around the pool and the beach.
Flip-flops lack the structure and support your foot needs. In fact, any shoe you can fold up and throw in your bag is bad news for your feet, not giving you the adequate support.
Flip-flops – and shoes of similar nature - bend in the arch causing foot strain and overuse. In fact, this strain can affect more than your feet, even leading to some serious back pain. This is because the structure (or the lack thereof) of flip-flops leads to the overusing of the calf muscle and pulls down on your lower back. And this could lead to a number of problems and injuries such as foot pain, ankle pain, knee pain and back pain.
Not to meantion the high injury risk! Many people trip over the tip of their flip-flop, and may even break their toes or pull off tendons of their toes.
For healthy, happy feet and comfortable footwear, consider sandals made out of leather or suede to cut down on blisters. Not only will you be doing your feet (and back) a HUGE favor but you'll also be walking around comfortably with cute, fashionable shoes that match your style! Make sure to look for models with cushioning and arch support to avoid possible health risks.

Big Belly & Butt Busters
The Right Diet
- High Protein Diet – eat low-fat protein and foods low on the glycemic index
- Skip Breakfast – studies have shown that people with this body type who consume breakfast end up eating more throughout the day.
- Eat Dessert – sweets can help boost serotonin. Try double-churned ice-cream because it has less sugar than frozen yogurt or sherbet.
- Drink Unsweetened Pomegranate Juice – this fat burning beverage is packed with antioxidants that help counteract the inflammation that leads to belly fat.
Supplement to Consider
- Chromium Polynicotinate – helps insulin’s regulation of blood glucose. People with belly fat tend to be insulin resistant.
- Walk at Night – take a walk after dinner to lower blood sugar levels
- Stretch the Back
- Unbleached Coffee Filters – help flush out a compound called cafestrol which has been linked to high cholesterol
The Right Diet
- High Carb Diet – mostly whole grains and vegetables. It is also best to eat smaller meals throughout the day to avoid drops in blood sugar.
- Avoid Dairy – fat goes straight to the butt, thighs, and hips.
- Drink Soy Milk – to help cut down fat and balance hormones.
- Eat a Late-night Snack – to help prevent blood sugar from dropping.
Supplement to Consider
- DIM (Diindolymethane) – helps balance estrogen and may help reduce the risk of certain cancers.
- Walk in the Morning – get your heart pumping for the day right away
- Stretch the Hips
- Compression Socks – help get rid of extra fluid and improve circulation.

Almost every skin discoloration can be covered and concealed; you just have to make sure that the product you choose is the right one. The one thing to be careful about all concealing is that no cosmetic product should be used on open skin. You must wait until the skin is completely closed before applying any makeup products.
Emergencies to be Concealed:
Break-outs, sunburns, rashes, sensitivities and allergic reactions – All of these cause the skin to be red. In order to cover and conceal these conditions, use Red Neutralizer No. 2 and Wrinkle Treatment Concealer – two concealers that are the most effective when it comes to concealing redness. Use a camouflage brush for applying and blending. Layer multiple applications of these products to get the amount of concealing you need.
Bruising – Bruising goes through several different stages of discoloration from red and purple tones to blue, yellow and green. Experiment with Red Neutralizer No.2, Wrinkle Treatment Concealer and Even-ing Concealer. I suggest Even-ing Concealer to use as the final step for a powdery finish.
Medical procedures – Most cosmetic procedures - including botox, injectable fillers and laser treatments - must have your doctor’s approval before you apply any makeup products. As skin may have many different tones, you need all four of our super concealers - Red Neutralizer No.2, Wrinkle Treatment Concealer, Coverall, Even-ing Concealer - to help you find the right combination for perfect coverage.
Check out Imperfection Correction Concealing Kit to get these super concealers and two camouflage brushes altogether at a special sale price.

What Moms Genes Can Tell You About Aging
Women frequently ask me “how can I know what I should be focusing on to be proactive about staying young?” My suggestion is to look at photos on both sides of your family. If you have pictures of your parents throughout their life, that is the best way to start.
Most of us seem to have more genetic influence from one parent than the other. During your lifetime, if you have heard your family members say “you look just like your mother” or “you act just like your father” , then you have a sense of which parent you most resemble.
Take careful notice of the physical changes of your parents throughout your lifetime. Where did the wrinkles form? Are there areas of their aging face that shows sagging? Look at the skin around their eyes; is there “hooding” on their upper eye lid? Is their hair thinning? Did it lose its volume? Do your aging parents have age spots on their face or hands? These can give you clues about how you potentially can age. Keep in mind, however, that while our gene pool is an indication of what can happen, our lifestyle and how we take care of ourselves is of greater importance.
Our parents (and certainly our grandparents) did not have the information we have today. The scientific studies on nutrition and lifestyle effects on aging are tremendous. Make sure you are doing everything you know to live a healthy life; prioritize healthy diet, regular exercise, adequate sleep, and a positive attitude.
While we’re talking about aging, I also want to remind you to be mindful of the genetic issues that lead to certain diseases in your family. You should know this information, and if your parents are still alive, ask questions about diseases that might be prevalent in your family.
Also: If your mother is still alive, thank her for all she did to teach you how to be healthy and happy.

Beauty Tips From My Mother
May 8, 2012
Mom Really Does Know All
It is important to know what health problems run on both sides of your family, but understanding any issues your mother has had, particularly gynecological problems, can help you to be proactive about your own health.
When did your mom enter menopause? If your mom hit menopause in her early 40s, younger than the average age of 52, you may want to consider starting a family sooner rather than later. However, if your mom had severe menopausal symptoms that does not necessarily mean you will too.
To lessen your risk of experiencing the same trouble, make lifestyle changes in your 30s and 40s to help keep your nervous system in balance: for example gradually cut back on caffeine, make time for exercise and try to reduce stress, also adding more soy to your diet may help ease symptoms according to recent research.
Did your mom have trouble getting pregnant?
If your mother had trouble conceiving, your risk of the same may be higher. Problems with egg production or endometriosis tend to be hereditary. If you know your mother had difficulty, it may be best not to put off trying to have children. also you not have to wait until you have problem to consult a doctor.
Does your mom or dad have a family history of any disease? Family history can predict many health risks, such as heart disease, diabetes, some forms of cancer, osteoporosis, depression, or stroke. While you should know the history on both sides of your family, links to hereditary diseases are often stronger on the maternal side for the daughter.
For example, having a mother, sister, or daughter with breast cancer doubles your risk. Given your mom’s history, your doctor may recommend a visit to a genetic counselor to do a blood test that can screen for genetic mutations.

Skincare Shouldn’t Stop at Your Neck
We are all very diligent and careful about taking the best care of our face and our neck. Night and day, we apply specialized products in these areas to help prevent and correct the signs of aging. What amazes me, however, is that for the rest of our body, we tend to use lower quality formulas. While these lower quality formulas might provide some moisturization, they do not prevent or correct the signs of aging – certainly not in the same way that our higher quality face and neck products do.
I strongly urge you to re-think the care of the skin on your body. Just like your face, it can be changed. You need products that contain highly effective botanicals, regenerating amino acids and proteins, vitamins and minerals, and other active ingredients that will reveal the younger skin on your body that you want. Products that have been formulated to promote collagen production on the skin of your face will do the same for the skin on your body.
Do you have crepiness under your arms, between your breasts, on your inner thighs and behind your knees? These conditions can be improved and even reversed using the right products. Do you have sun damage on your chest? Do you have bumps on the back of your arms? Are your knees sagging? Start taking special care of the skin on your body NOW to improve these conditions.
The best time to apply your anti-aging body product is after you shower, while your skin is warm and damp. Massage in the product and let it be absorbed by your skin before dressing. Keep in mind that a high quality formula will disappear and go right into your skin. Also, remember that it generally takes about 2-4 weeks before you start to see visible improvements and a dramatic change in your skin.

Why Diane Eats Avocado Everyday
I love avocados so much that I include them in my diet every day. Not only are they delicious and taste great, but they also provide amazing health benefits, especially for your skin, hair and nails.
I think of avocados as nature’s moisturizers for the skin, hydrating skin from the inside out. Full of skin healthy polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats, avocado helps control skin’s moisture level that is crucial for smooth, consistent complexion and texture.
So what are some other amazing benefits of this miracle fruit? Avocados are rich in B vitamins, which help with metabolism and energy. They contain 60% more potassium than bananas which play an important role in fluid balance in the body including the moisture content in the skin.
They are full of other healthy skin nutrients such as vitamin E and K. Vitamin E, an important antioxidant in the skin, helps protect the skin from free radicals. Vitamin K, another fat-soluble vitamin, plays a role in blood clotting and bone health.
I add my avocado to my salad every day because avocado when eaten with vegetables (and fruits) improves the body’s ability to absorb skin-healthy nutrients. Add a small amount of avocado to a salad of carrot, lettuce, spinach and your body will absorb super skin-protecting nutrients such as alpha-carotene, beta-carotene, lycopene and lutein.
And that is not all! We all know the importance of fiber for a balanced, healthy diet. And avocados, with high fiber content, contain both insoluble and soluble fiber. The benefits of each type of fiber are already well known: Insoluble fiber cleans out your bowels by way of increasingly efficient bowel movements. And soluble fiber is great for appetite control, of making you feel full for a longer period of time.
Include some avocado in your diet every day and you will notice the difference in your smooth, glowing skin, shiny hair and strong, healthy nails!

The “Superhero” Anti-Wrinkle Juices
We all want to fight wrinkles in every way we know how. And lately, we have been discussing improving the skin and reducing fine lines and wrinkles from “the inside” – meaning with the help of healthy superfoods with amazing anti-aging benefits.
We have already shared Diane’s Special Anti-Aging Recipe with you. And it’s time for the super anti-wrinkle juices.
Here are some of the amazing juice ingredients that have been found to be extremely beneficial in fighting wrinkles and getting flawless, glowing, younger looking skin.
Beet Juice – Traditionally used to clean and support the liver, beet juice is rich in carotenes. The leaves, which can be juiced along with the stems, are loaded with minerals, such as iron, magnesium, calcium, manganese and potassium.
Carrot juice – This is one of nature’s richest sources of alpha- and beta-carotene. And did you know that alpha-carotene is considered nature’s best natural sun blocker? All the more reason to drink carrot juice!
Cucumber and bell pepper juices – Excellent sources of silicon, which is known to improve the appearance of the skin. Another major perk? As the pH of cucumber is close to that of the skin, it may help prevent wrinkles!
Ginger juice – Rich in zinc, ginger juice is an excellent anti-inflammatory!
Green leafy vegetable juices – Parsley, spinach, kale, chard, beet tops, mustard greens, wheatgrass… The juice of these herbs and vegetables are particularly rich in chlorophyll, antioxidants and alkalizing minerals.
Parsnip juice – A traditional remedy for beautifying the skin, hair and nails.

Where Aging Begins
Wrinkled skin begins at the cellular level; the result of environmental and biological factors. As the cell plasma membrane ages, it stiffens and loses its fluidity. When it hardens, water cannot pass through and toxins build up, causing inflammation. Inflammation in the skin can masquerade as faux wrinkles.
Major contributing factors to the build up of toxins and the aging of cells include:
- Environment toxins and a toxic, congested internal environment
- Free radical attacks on cells
- Weakened immune system
- Sun damage
- Insulin resistance
- Sleep disturbances
Address the underlying causes of wrinkles for visible results right where you want them…on your face!
